Vertical Hospital Expansion Without Interrupting Patient Care

AdventHealth Kissimmee serves one of Central Florida’s fastest-growing communities. To meet increasing patient demand, the hospital expanded from 162 to 282 beds by constructing a three-story vertical addition above its existing facility, along with a new mechanical penthouse to support both existing and new patient care spaces.

Working alongside Brasfield & Gorrie, Corvant delivered the mechanical and plumbing systems required for the expansion while allowing the hospital to remain fully operational throughout construction.

The Challenge

Building upward on an occupied hospital created extraordinary coordination challenges. Existing rooftop HVAC equipment, medical gas systems, plumbing infrastructure and critical mechanical systems had to remain fully operational while an entirely new structure was built around them.

Every shutdown required precise planning and coordination. Patient care, surgeries and daily hospital operations could not be interrupted, making safety, sequencing and system reliability essential throughout the project.

Our Approach

Corvant worked closely with Brasfield & Gorrie and hospital leadership to develop a phased construction strategy that prioritized uninterrupted operations. Mechanical work began at the new penthouse level before progressing downward through each floor, allowing new systems to be installed, tested and commissioned before transitioning service from the existing rooftop equipment.

The team coordinated hundreds of carefully planned system tie-ins involving HVAC, chilled water, heating hot water, domestic water, plumbing and medical gas systems. Temporary solutions, detailed shutdown planning and continuous communication allowed every transition to occur with minimal disruption while maintaining patient safety and comfort.

The Outcome

The expansion was delivered ahead of schedule with no disruption to patient care or hospital operations. The new tower opened to patients in late 2021, increasing the hospital’s capacity by 120 beds while modernizing the facility’s mechanical infrastructure.
