Amazon Sortation Center HVAC Modernization

A large-scale HVAC replacement completed inside a live, 24/7 Amazon sortation center. Corvant transitioned the facility from old systems to new within 24 hours while reducing downtime beyond what was originally planned.

Client & Context

Amazon’s Miami Sortation Center is a 335,800-square-foot logistics facility that operates around the clock, helping move packages efficiently through the company’s distribution network. Maintaining dependable building systems is essential to employee comfort, operational efficiency and uninterrupted fulfillment operations.

To improve long-term reliability and expand cooling capacity, Amazon initiated a major HVAC modernization that included replacing aging rooftop equipment while keeping the facility operational throughout construction.

The Challenge

The project required replacing 23 rooftop HVAC units, removing two existing CRAC units and installing nine additional units to improve cooling capacity and system redundancy.

The work was carefully planned around a holiday-weekend shutdown to minimize operational impacts, but changing site conditions compressed the schedule even further. Portions of the facility remained operational longer than expected, affecting crane access and installation sequencing. Missing the shutdown window would have delayed critical upgrades and extended reliance on aging equipment.

Our Approach

Corvant worked closely with Amazon, Catamount Constructors and project partners to develop a detailed execution plan centered around the limited shutdown window. Crews completed as much preparation as possible before crane operations began, allowing rooftop equipment to be removed, replaced and commissioned as efficiently as possible.

As project conditions changed, the team quickly adjusted installation sequencing while coordinating every equipment disconnect, crane lift, reconnection and startup with the electrical contractor. Careful planning, field expertise and real-time coordination kept the project moving safely and efficiently despite the compressed schedule.

The Outcome

Corvant completed the HVAC modernization within the planned shutdown window, replacing all 23 rooftop units, removing two CRAC units and installing nine new HVAC units to improve temperature control and long-term system reliability.

Most importantly, the transition from the existing systems to the new equipment was completed within 24 hours, allowing Amazon to remain operational longer than anticipated before the shutdown and return to full production quickly. The project reinforced Corvant’s ability to execute complex retrofit work in active, mission-critical facilities where operational continuity is just as important as construction.
